The Art of Growing Climbing Plants.
The many kinds of plants that occur on old walls and buildings are often so beautifully placed and of so charming a character that gardeners have taken a leaf from Nature’s book and endeavoured to obtain similar effects with native and exotic climbing plants.
So popular has this feature to have climbing plants in most areas of the garden become, most up-to-date gardeners include a wall garden or climbing frame amongst their other attractions, and such a feature is a source of considerable interest, for a very wide selection of climbing plants may be grown in or about the area.
When ruins of a stone or brick building exist, particularly if the walls are of considerable thickness, excellent facilities are offered for the establishment of a wall garden. The framework is already there ready and waiting for all manner of climbing plants to prosper.
When the planting position is bounded closely by a gravelled or paved path then a space 18 inches by 24 inches and deep should be prepared initially. The value of incorporating some organic compost cannot be over emphasised. This will aid in the retention of moisture. We have an article on How to Make your own Organic Vegetable Compost at:->
